AROMATHERAPY

Massage with fragrant oils has biblical precedents. It is now practiced to relieve stress as part of a holistic approach to health and self-healing. Some of the essential oils (camomile, basil) may be absorbed in minute quantities. Touch and smell are primitive senses and focusing on them can induce relaxation. (see Relaxation, Touch)

The sense of smell can evoke powerful memories and can be used to trigger emotional memories, or to help induce a state of relaxation (for example, evoking memories of a seaside holiday with cassette tapes of seagulls and waves, combined with seaside smells).

Aromatherapists usually make recommendations about diet, massage, breathing and relaxation exercises, as well as the use of inhalations, bath oils and lotions.
